What's in your Cargo Bib Short?

Cargo Bib Shorts with Pockets

The Cargo Bibshort with Pockets (Men's , Women's) was launched in early 2021. It's becoming popular and more customers are choosing to add a pair to their arsenal of bibshorts.

When I was developing these bibs, my goal was to make the pockets the largest you'd see on a pair of cargo bib shorts. I also wanted to put a pocket on every available surface of this cargo bib (within reason).

What's the point of a cargo bib short if the pockets aren't generous or numerous enough? Go big or go home was the motto here.

When I ride in my personal cargo bibs, I load up the pockets as follows :

  • Thigh Pockets (Left) - Phone, Money, ID
  • Thigh Pocket (Right) - Gels, Bars, Snacks
  • Lower Back Pocket - spare tube, mini pump
  • Higher Back Pocket - Unused. I wear a jersey with pockets that are more accessible. I carry my keys and extra water bottle (3 bottles on rides above 80km, 2 on the bike, 1 in my jersey pocket) in my jersey pocket.

A jar of peanut butter is pushing it

I am curious to know how RedWhite's customers are using their Cargo Bib Short. Specifically, i'd like to know what you typically carry in each pocket. I'm also interested in knowing if there's a pocket you don't use at all.

For example, I never use the Higher Back Pocket. I included it because some customers do use it when they're wearing a T-shirt without pockets. It also doesn't impact the comfort of the bibshort, so there's no downside to adding it.

If you own a pair of RedWhite's Cargos, i'd really appreciate it if you could leave a comment below in the following format, describing what you put into each pocket :

  • THIGH POCKET (LEFT):
  • THIGH POCKET (RIGHT) :
  • LOWER BACK POCKET :
  • HIGHER BACK POCKET :

I have left an example of a comment below. You may copy the format and reuse it.

I also went beyond the format I gave above by including some notes about my personal use case. Feel free to leave additional comments which other readers of this blog post might find useful / interesting.

I look forward to reading your comments.

PS : Don't own a pair of Cargo Bibshorts? Before you decide to try one, I recommend taking a moment to read a deep dive about them.

From this small sample size, it appears that the UPPER BACK POCKET is hardly being used. In usual circumstances, this would mean there’s an opportunity to remove it and drop the price by a few dollars. However, it seems to not be worth the savings since there are edge scenarios in which that pocket is used.

Anyone adding comments after this : Mind talking a but more about areas for improvement? Something specific will be useful.

THIGH POCKET (LEFT): Half eaten bars and used wrappers. Sometimes gloves. By default, it’s my rubbish bin really.
THIGH POCKET (RIGHT) : Mobile phone.
LOWER BACK POCKET : Hand-pump and mtb tube.
HIGHER BACK POCKET : Nothing.

This bibshorts is great with a t-shirt for off-roads when I ride on the MTB trails and single-tracks.

THIGH POCKET (LEFT) : Food wrappers (mostly stroopwafel wrappers) :)
THIGH POCKET (RIGHT) : Brevet card, credit card, salt/caffeine tablets
LOWER BACK POCKET : Usually empty, but a frozen 500ml bottle on a hot day is a treat!
HIGHER BACK POCKET : Unused.

I loved your cargo Bipshorts, It’s the main Bipshorts that I used to go to work. It has my island pass and other cards in my right thigh pocket. My money and mask in my left thigh pocket. These two is already good enough for my daily to weekly cycling. The fitting is so much better than the normal RW Bipshorts I have.

THIGH POCKET (LEFT) : Phone. A Samsung S9+ “phablet”

THIGH POCKET (RIGHT) : Gels & nutrition. I also use this pocket to keep wrappers from consumed food when I can’t find a bin.

LOWER BACK POCKET : Spare tube, mini pump, tyre levers. Sometimes I put my mini pump into my jersey pocket.

HIGHER BACK POCKET : Unused.

I do a weekly casual ride. This ride isn’t fast and I use it to scout new roads to add to my routes. I usually do these rides in a loose fitting T-shirt. I wear a Cargo Bib on these rides so I have some pockets to chuck my phone, keys and money into. I wear a T-shirt because it makes me feel less conspicuous when I go somewhere for lunch post ride.

On most other rides (sub 100km), Cargo Bibs are slightly overkill since I can carry everything I need in my jersey pockets. I am planning to get back into Mountain Biking this year and I see myself using the Cargos in the trails more than on the road.
